Oftentimes when one thinks of a person who is multi-talented, he or she may think of certain celebrities on television. They may be able to sing and dance, act, play instruments or draw and design art; however, students and staff may think of the new principal at Revere High School as a versatile person.
Phil King assumed the position of principal after previous leader Bill Adams took a job as principal at Sacred Heart School. King’s coworkers describe him as a very multi-talented man. In high school he was the quarterback for his football team, the point guard for his basketball team, an active member at his church, a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), a lead in multiple musicals and winner of countless awards. Now he enjoys singing, taking walks and watching sports. Superintendent Randy Boroff believes that King’s talents in other areas will help him with his current job.
"His varied interests will enhance his impact on the high school," Boroff said.
To learn the basics of an education career, King attended St. Joseph College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Bluffton University. He received his Master’s Degree from John Carroll University. He began his career as a math teacher, basketball coach and drama coach. Before coming to Revere, King was an assistant principal at Normandy High School for seven years and deputy principal at Parma Senior High School for five years.
"I have wanted to be a building principal for a while. The reason I came here is because it is a great fit for me. I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to work here with such fine students and staff," King said.
King had to go through a long process in order to obtain the position as principal. He not only had to meet the requirements of the school board, but he also had to partake in interviews.
Vice Principal John Evans explained why this job is fit for a King.
"He is very well qualified, and he went through rigorous interviews with the superintendent’s search committee. Obviously, he came out on top,"
Evans said. King noted that he is a firm believer in collaboration, and he believes that to achieve greatness, the staff must come together as a team. King’s secretary Jessica Baird mentioned King’s strong points.
"He is very honest, fair, easy to talk to, open to suggestion and respectful. There is a way to go about people to show that that you respect them, and to make the individual members of the team want to work for you, [which King does]," Baird said.
Like many new principals, King has many goals he hopes to achieve. He aims to become the best leader he can by studying those around him.
"My goal this year is to get to know the culture, the staff, the students and the community. I want them to get to know me. People need to trust me, [and in order to do so] they must get to know me," King said.
Many students have noticed that King goes out of his way to talk and meet with students. He visited numerous sports practices before school began and went in to classrooms to greet students on their first day back to school.
The new King of Revere High School has many goals for his upcoming years as principal and his multi-talented personality will help him to achieve them all.
