Student council will host a dance after the student body voted and agreed upon a formal Sadie Hawkins dance, in which girls invite the boys to attend as their dates.
Year after year, winter dances have had a difficult time gathering enthusiasm and support from the students. In many cases, the dance has even been cancelled because of a lack of interest. This year, however, numerous students discussed that they wanted a different theme from the past years’ winter dances. Therefore, Student Council gathered the ideas that they heard and allowed every high school student to vote whether they would like a formal, a casual, or a Sadie Hawkins/Sweetheart dance. Co-president Hannah Bonacci and the rest of the Student Council hoped that allowing the student body to vote would encourage a higher participation and attendance to the dance.
"I think that the students’ enthusiasm came from knowing they were directly involved by choosing the theme and dress, along with the fact that the theme is different than anything we have done before. I think feeling like you have a say in a decision that affects you makes you more inclined to participate," Bonacci said.
Student Council vice president Morgan Leaventon continued to acknowledge the importance of the entire school inputting their opinions of the themes that they want.
"Because the dance is for the student body, they should voice their opinion," Leaventon said.
Co-president of Student Council Rachel Gresham hopes that this dance will increase student involvement and spirit.
"Our goal is not to make a profit, we just want to get the student body involved," Gresham said.
Bonacci also hopes that by having a large student turn out, the dance theme will become an event that will take place yearly.
"[We want] to make it a tradition instead of a dance we attempt every couple of years. We are testing out the Sadie Hawkins theme and hoping that it proves to be a success to be used again in the future," Bonacci said.
Student Council has advertised and promoted the event through as much publicity as possible by making signs, flyers, announcements, and word of mouth.
"We are depending on our Student Council members to really hype up the dance and get people to follow along," Bonacci said.
Beach Boyz Entertainment plans on serving as the disc jockey for the winter dance. In previous years, the school has hired different disc jockeys for various reasons such as affordability, variety, and student popularity.
"We are hoping the DJ is a success with the student body. To help ensure that, we are sending a playlist in to the company so they have a base," Bonacci said.
To gain a better idea of the number of students expected to attend the dance, the ticket prices will increase on the night of the dance. They will cost $5 presale, and $7 at the door.
"We are going to be making the ticket sale more expensive at the door like homecoming, in order to help prevent cancelling the dance…. [I] encourage students to go to the dance
The council still plans on using wintry decorations in either the auxiliary or main gym, depending on the number of expected attendees.
"We are going to keep [the decorations] as a wintry theme with a lot of blues and white colors. We are also working on getting a snow machine that will not ruin the gym floor," Gresham said.
The dance will take place on Saturday, February 20
from 8:00pm to 11:00pm.
