At-a-glance

Revere High School will add the Chinese Mandarin language to its curriculum next year, allowing students an opportunity to experience the Chinese language and culture.
The World Language Committee was involved in the decision to incorporate a new foreign language option into the course selection for any high school student. Members of the committee travelled to different high schools that offer the Chinese language and visited the University of Akron and Ohio State University to gather information. Principal Bill Adams is one of the administrators who was involved with this decision.
Adams said that administrators "are always reviewing the curriculum to provide opportunity" and the course may even offer a college or job opportunity for a student.
Next year, the only level that will be offered is Chinese 1. The language may progress in following years based on popularity.
"This may be a difficult language to learn. If it is successful . . . then the following year we will offer Chinese 2, and so on, as long as there is demand," Adams said.
Adams acknowledges the difficulty of learning the Chinese language.
Guidance counselor Linda Weigand explains the second reason for offering a new language to students, aside from survey results.
"China is the number one world exporter. Based on this, there seems to be a driving force for the language of Chinese to be taught in schools," Weigand said.
