When you decide to participate in a school team, do you think about drug testing? No, you don't, you think about having fun, playing hard, and wining. But what you don't realize is that when you join a team you give your school permission to randomly drug test you, if they feel it is necessary; you agree to keep your grades up, and you basically agree to be a good student.
Most schools will give random drug tests in order to keep the school a safe environment and to make sure the players are healthy.
Schools are supposed to be a safe, learning environment. It should be a place where students don't feel threatened. If students can't feel safe at school then they won't be able to learn and that deifies the whole meaning of being at school. Students that are on drugs aren't in their right state of mind and they are unpredictable, which is not safe for the rest of the students nor the administration. That is why it is important for schools to have random drug testing, to make sure students are in their five senses and that they are safe.
When you're in a school team, whether it is basketball, the debate team, or cheerleading, the coaches or whoever is in charge don't want players or team members who are doing drugs. When you are doing drugs, you get mood swings and it 's like an emotional roller coaster. One day you could be feeling as if you can do anything in the world and the next day you can feel really sick. Coaches don't want players that are feeling sick all the time and change their moods every five minutes. They want students who are responsible and are feeling like themselves. If you're doing drugs while playing sports, then the drugs will have a dramatic effect on the way you perform. So basically coaches wouldn't and don't want players that are on drugs.
Some students may be reluctant about supporting the random drug testing, but in the long run they'll be happy that the schools made them do the drug testing. They will appreciate the fact that they don't have any problems with drug abuse. So next time you think that the random drug testing is unfair or unnecessary, think about the security you had all throughout your high school years and about your health that was made possible by the drug testing.
