At-a-glance

It’s that time of year again- princess ball gowns, limos, and those pesky boutonnieres that NO ONE knows how to pin on. It’s a night of magic for high school students, but unfortunately for one specific group at American Fork High School, the magic came to a stop before they even had a chance to dance.

Sophomores, Kailey Grant and Samantha Reed, were all ready to dance the night away with their dates, when they were denied admittance to the dance due to dress code violation. “ I couldn’t have been more upset”, says Grant. “Not only have I never been to prom, but I don’t even go to AF. We don’t have a dress code at my school, so I just assumed it was like that everywhere else, how was I supposed to know?”.

The girls continually fought administration until they were forced to leave the dance and return with modest coverings that conformed to the dress code. “We have to hold all students to the same standard of dress at all school functions. Making an exception for those girls would just upset everyone else”, said dance chaperone, Michelle Dansy.

According to AFHS policy, students who bring guests from other schools are required to fill out a Guest Dance Form

AFHS guidelines for formal dance attire include:

- NO shorts or skirts shorter than three to four inches above the knee.

- NO bare shoulders or underarms (sleeve past shoulder seam of shirt required).

- NO clothing that reveals undergarments.

- NO low necklines.

Although both girls claim they never signed anything regarding dress code, they were still held accountable for breaking dress code on more than one of the above mentioned guidelines. After driving home and returning in modest, dress code appropriate, both girls were admitted to the dance without any problems.

The dress code clearly states the rules about a guest attending. Guests are also required to initial next to the statement, “ I understand AFHS dress standards have been explained and that I will not be permitted into the dance if dressed inappropriately.”

That was interesting story. I wonder why the dress code has gotten so strict lately. I mean, dances are about feeling pretty, and if you feel pretty in a strapless dress, then why can't you wear it? I liked the writing for this article, and the story was pretty good.

See, this is why I don’t do prom. Great article though :) Very professional.

I really like this article because I can relate to this because I go to AFHS and I myself have filled out an "Guest dance form" because my boyfriend goes to a different school. It is ridiculous and annoying I must say and it does upset me but the school does have to be fair to everyone. I like how you told the reader right away what this subject was about to keep them reading and also how you involved details.
