At-a-glance

"Foreign Language is a waste of time. It is useless, boring, uninteresting, god awful, and something I'm never going to use in the real world". If anyone ever tells you this, they are wrong. Take their foreign language advice and flush it down the toilet.

I always need Spanish in the real world. Working at Target since December 2007, I have used what I've learned in my five and a half years to communicate with shoppers, translate instructions, give directions, and to even communicate to my own team members. For about three months, I worked with a man who only spoke Spanish and the only way I could talk to him was through using the Spanish I learned in High School and Middle School. It is probably one of the more useful things I will take out of THS, no offense to the other teachers, I apologize.

You may think with Spanish, there is no help. It can truly be difficult to learn, but all you need is a little devotion and a little bit of studying.

It's important to take the required two years of Foreign Language or even all four years, I took all four years. I hear all the time that taking all 4 years can look really good when applying to college. With the massive cultural difference in our society today, being able to communicate with someone who does not speak English will not only help them out, it will make you look good.

According to Spanish teacher and Foreign Language Department Head Senora Maryann Brady, "the business world of tomorrow needs individuals who can work in a culturally diverse environment and who have strong skills in a foreign language."

Senora Brady says that jobs a foreign language is very useful in include "service industries (hotel, tourism, food); publishers and entertainment industries (films, radio, and sound production); corporate offices with overseas accounts; medicine, law, business, journalism, and government offices."

Working in the real world, Sophomore Cody Browning has found that his studies in Spanish have turned out useful.

"Working at Market Basket," says Browning. " I've been able to help customers who speak absolutely no English find the products they are looking for."

To try and get students more involved with foreign cultures and do more "hands-on" activities other than classroom discussions, teachers in the foreign language department run a yearly Foreign Language Week. French students enjoy breakfast parties. Spanish students have created maracas out of paper mâché. Last year a guest came in from a local gym and taught students how to do the Zumba, a common Spanish dance.

According to Senora Brady, this year's Foreign Language Week will be held April 12-16. Unfortunately for eager students, "the details are being kept under wrap."
