Connor Pearson knows who I am, I
found myself thinking. He knows my name. Of
course, my name was just about the only thing he did
know about me, but it was something.
After all, what did Prince Charming know about
Cinderella besides her shoe size?
(taken from back of book)
Too old for fairytales? Yes, I'm sure you're thinking that. We’ve been through the stories of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Did you ever stop and think that these stories were the ones that first taught you of love, trust, friendship, and kindness? These stories were the ones that taught you that dreams can come true. One such story that every little girl has heard of is “Cinderella.”
Melissa Kantor has opened the file cabinets of our memory and brought back the story of Cinderella, the modern-day version. The only difference is that the “faraway kingdom” is really a suburb in Long Island. Our Cinderella is Lucy Norton, a sophomore just trying to get through high school as quickly as she can. After her mother died, her father had married Mara, her supposedly “wicked stepmother.” Like Cinderella, Lucy has two stepsisters whom she names Princess One and Princess Two. Lucy, her two stepsisters, and Mara are shipped to live in Long Island while Lucy’s father finishes a project for work on the other side of the country in San Francisco. Her father visits every weekend but during the weekdays, well, that’s another story. Lucy is forced to live in the basement with no furniture but a flimsy mattress. She has no friends and only dreams of Connor Pearson, the captain of the varsity basketball team. This issue gives the book its unique title. If Lucy has everything that Cinderella had, then only one thing can be missing from her life: Prince Charming.
What happens when Lucy’s dreams do come true? Is it everything she had possibly hoped for? Or could there be someone else on her mind? Pick up this exciting book at your local library or bookstore to find out what happens to Lucy Norton!
