The candidates, Senator John Kerry (Democrat) and current President George Bush (Republican) are right behind each other in the polls for the White House. This year is said to be one of the most crucial election years since the polls are so close. Both candidates are offering their views on the most important issues and are hoping you agree with their opinions, so you elect the right person into office. They're giving their views on abortion, the economy, education, medical, gay rights, the Iraq War and etc.
When George Bush was elected into office, the country had been in a major deficit. John Kerry said not only that he would change that, but he will create jobs for the two million people that lost their jobs also. Bush made tax cuts for the wealthiest people in America, and Kerry wants to repeal that. Instead, he wants to focus on spending money on schools, pollution cleanup, and to creating more jobs for the unemployed. On the topic of education, both candidates want to help the poor go to college and prevent high school students from dropping out.
Can you imagine someone telling you what you can and cannot do with your body, or telling you who you're supposed to marry? Our next President can! George Bush only supports abortion if the woman's life is endangered; and John Kerry fully supports abortion rights. Should they tell you what you can do with your body? It's your body, and it should be your decision, not their's. They can also tell you who you can marry. Bush fully opposes gay marriage, he even wants to ban it. John Kerry also opposes gay marriage, but supports civil unions that will ban discrimination and extend hate-crime protection to gays.
The troops have been stationed in Iraq for a while. President Bush has said, "We had a swift victory!" So why are our troops still out there? The President ordered $87 billion for continuing operation and aid in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Kerry also agrees with the decision for going to war, only he would change the U.S. Authority in the mid-east and put the U.N. Leadership in charge.
These candidates for the election have the power to decide what's going to happen to you in the future. Every decision they make is important, and can affect you in some way. So, when you're old enough to vote, make sure you vote for a candidate that has similar views as you do on the topics you think are most important.
