Every year band students have a chance to excel with their musical instruments outside of their school band room. High school students from around the district audition for a concert and honor band. The middle school students can audition for All-District band. On November 5, All-District band auditions were held at Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. Some Cameron band students participated in this event.

Cameron High School sent seven students, and all seven of them placed. Cameron Middle School sent twenty-one students, and fourteen of them placed. Two students from Cameron received the honor of first chair, Sophomore Tyler Slover and Eighth Grader Camryn Clay. “I feel pretty accomplished about making first chair. I feel like its a pretty nice honor. I'm happy I got to go there and play and ended up making first chair. It was a very nice feeling,” said Tyler.

“I was excited about getting first chair. It took a lot of practice, but it paid off and I got what I wanted,” said Camryn. Middle school students have band class every day. During the class they practice full band performances and solo performances for concerts and contests. “It was a lot of hard work to practice for the audition. It was more than just practicing in class. I had to come in after school to work on my audition,” added Camryn.

For these auditions there is a great amount of pressure in squeezing time from their other activities, and it requires a lot of dedication from the students. “I am very proud of our students. Around this time of the year is very hectic, with the fall sports winding down, the winter sports beginning, and other activities like the upcoming musical. The student's time is really stretched. This music is very challenging, and for them to step up to the challenge speaks highly for them,” said Band Director Mr. Shane Jones.

All of the bands perform at the All District Band Concert beginning at 6:00 p.m. on December 10. The event is hosted at Platte County High School and is open to the public. These students have worked very hard and would appreciate the community’s support.
