CHS Super Bowl XLV Picks

Super Bowl MVP Bart Starr said, “Anyone can support a team that is winning. It takes no courage. But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you, that takes a lot of courage.” Cameron students seem to be on both sides when it comes to choosing a team to root for out of the two titans (Pittsburgh Steelers & Green Bay Packers) who will soon be clashing for Super Bowl XLV on 2/11/11.

Midwestern individuals understand football like the coast states understand the tides. Sophomore Mikey Richardson said, “I have played football since fifth grade. It is tough, enduring, and long. Based on that,  I am going to have to go with the Steelers all the way.” Even before the last playoff games, Mikey had his picks. Mikey said, “Pittsburgh is going to win; they are better defensively and offensively [than the Jets]. I am also thinking the Packers are going to win. Their offense is way too good for the Bears defense.”

Sophomore Court Ott is very gifted with sports knowledge. He is known on the CHS Academic team as the “Sports Guy.” Court said, “I pick the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are definitely good on the defense. They have a good leader in Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. He is really good because he can get out of the pocket and extend plays longer.”

The two sophomores seemed pretty dead-set on the Steelers, but it was not so for one man. Junior Josh Elliot said, “I think the Packers are going to win. They won the first two Super Bowls in a row. They have won more Super Bowls than anyone else. ”

Here’s hoping Josh’s confidence in his team is better invested than his trivia knowledge. The Steelers actually have the record for most Superbowl wins with 6. The Packers have the record for most NFL World Championships at a huge collection of 12, but only 3 Super Bowl wins.

One of the most interesting things about Super Bowl XLV is that there may be no cheerleaders. Junior Alexander Williams said, “I don’t know much about either team, but I do know that neither team has cheerleaders.” Alex is completely correct. The Packers lost their cheerful squad in 1988 when several surveys of the area showed customers did not really care. The Steelers were even more brutal when they dropped their cheerleaders in 1970 for no given reason and with little publicity.  Hopefully the onset of new commercials will keep spirits high during the biggest game of the year.

Fantasy Football is the propulsion that keeps Senior Wesley McDowell’s spirits up. Wesley said, “I have a fantasy football team. Based on the variables, a lot of my team could change. I have Tom Brady at quarterback right now.” Wesley has since decided that he will change part of his team.

No matter what your motivation for enjoyment, whether it be statistics, a good passing game, a fantasy football team, or even cheerleaders, we can all enjoy the Super Bowl. Only time will tell who wins. Will it be the Steelers with their 6 previous Super Bowl wins? Or, will it be the Packers with their record 12 NFL World Championships? Watch the game to find out!
