Imagine taking over the world in less than three hours by starting with a few countries in Africa and slowly consuming everything in your path until no one is left, and you are the sole ruler of the world! That’s what students at Cameron High School get to do every week.  Of course every good ruler needs to know where they came from, so Cameron Middle School, and then Cameron High School, created Napoleonic League (NPL).

NPL President Junior Justin Persel said, “Napoleonic League is a chance for a group of students who enjoy learning about military history and strategy to learn more about it and make their own strategies.” Since every future ruler needs to start somewhere NPL gives everyone, even beginners, a chance to learn about military strategy and play a strategy game that is all about taking over the world, Risk.

Mr. David Mayne said, “This is open to anyone. We already had some people who didn’t know how to play at the initial meeting who were there with some friends. We’re open to anyone.” Even someone who has never played Risk before can have fun in this club. All that’s needed is the will to learn and a fondness for military history. Everyone has a chance to conquer the world and learn about history, although most people have a favorite part.

Senior Ryan Markle said, “My favorite part is actually playing the game and trying out new strategies for world domination.” While he might like the playing more, not everyone in the club comes in with the idea to rule the world. Some just like to learn about the great military conquests of the time. In the learning sessions the students get to watch a documentary about great wars or weapons of the time, which can be quite interesting.  There are many different types of documentaries and not all of them are the dry commentary you are thinking of.

So have you ever wanted to completely crush your opponents in single combat over the fate of Australia? Well then students, just grab your Risk board or ten dollars and walk on over to the school library and join in the fun. Not only do you get to learn how to conquer your own country, but also how to create the strategies to get you there! You’ll be able to finally know how it feels to be sole ruler of the known world, and who doesn’t want that?
