Uncommon Sense: Pausing the Protest
-

The infamous Fred Phelps and his deranged congregation have struck again. We are all aware of the groundless “convictions” and “beliefs” held by this insane group of nut jobs. They claim things like “Obama is the ‘Anti-Christ’” and “God hates fags” while protesting military funerals across the country. The Westboro Baptist Church has even held one of their military funeral protests in our own town. They took their time to come to the small rural town of Cameron, Missouri, hence the reason I’m baffled by their decision to not show themselves at the memorial service for the tragic shooting which occurred recently in Tuscon, Arizona.

Or I was baffled until I put a little more thought into what their motive could have been.

First and foremost I have this inkling that if any of these wackos decided to show themselves, one of them would have been shot. Some bold soul down in Arizona would have more than likely attempted an assassination on a Westboro member, and perhaps Phelps himself if he had shown his face. Don’t worry though, just because you won’t see their faces there doesn’t mean we won’t hear from them.

After announcing they would not be present it was also released the band of bozos were not attending because they had been given radio airtime on a local Tuscon station and a station in Toronto, Canada. I honestly can’t believe these stations have even agreed to host them, and frankly I am upset because they are receiving the attention they seem to so much desire.

I know it may sound hypocritical for me to make this assumption, but the only logical explanation, the only logical motivation for Fred Phelps and his followers doing what they do, is to seek out attention. And by George our media gives it to them. So consider this a public service announcement. We all know how crazy these people are. Most of us have seen and experienced their protesting firsthand in our hometown, and maybe that explains why this topic gets me so fired up. But maybe if we decided to ignore them and our media didn’t seek them out for a good story, then maybe, just maybe, they would realize no one in their right mind (because obviously none of them are) wants to hear anything from them ever again.
