Jazz Choir Ready to Hit the Stage

For four years running, the Cameron High School Jazz Choir has been putting on a show for the community. Formerly called Broadway Night, the newly christened Cabaret Night will include more genres of music as an hour and a half’s worth of a musical supernova. And this year, with more songs, more complex sets, and more time and effort put into the show in general, Cabaret Night is sure to be a show to remember.

“We are doing more large group numbers this year than we’ve ever done in the past. We’re also doing a girl’s number and a guy’s number, and we’ve never done that in the past,” said Jazz Choir Director Mr. Brian Von Glahn. There is a total of 7 songs involving the entire group this year, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat, Feeling Good, and Shake Your Groove Thing are just a few. The men will be performing Next to Loving I Like Fighting Best, and the women will be performing Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend

For each song, there is a good deal of dancing as well as singing. And it takes a while for some students to pick up on the moves. The large amount of group numbers may be the reason for the ensemble getting together for practices much sooner than they usually do. “We started preparing for this show a lot earlier than we have in the past,” said Mr. Von Glahn. “We even had practices last semester.”

For some, the dances are one of the most exciting parts of the show. Junior Megan Godby said, “This year we have more dances for the whole group to do together. I am really excited about this show, and hopefully it will be as much fun for people to watch as I have while I am dancing.”

This show has basically been progressing in quality for four years. Senior Caroline Lowenstein has been a part of the show since it’s beginning when she was a freshman. “The first year, I think we only did around 3 or 4 group songs, compared to 7 this year. I think we’ve increased the amount of songs we’ve done each year. And it’s the first year we’ve had a girl’s song and a guy’s song. And this year we started practicing way before we have any other year. The first year, I don’t think we had anybody try out for solos.”

Things have certainly changed in four years, and it’s shaping up to be a great show. If you’d like to come and see for yourself, call Cameron High School at 816-632-2129 to order tickets. They are $9 per seat, and the show is on January 22 at 7:00 pm at Goodrich Auditorium. Come on out and see the progress Cameron High School Jazz Choir has made!
