Cameron Wrestling has a strong history. For over 20 years, Mr. Lanny Wake directed the tradition. Now, a new generation has come to take up the mantle of responsibility. Mr. Phillip Limb is the new head coach.

Mr. Limb’s past coaching experiences have made him the top guy for this job. Head Coach Phillip Limb said, “I was an assistant coach here last year. Prior to that I coached in Gallatin, MO for 5 years.” During Mr. Limb’s time in Gallatin, the wreslting team went 18-3 and won a conference championship one year.

Mr. Limb personally had an undefeated wrestling season his senior year of high school. Mr. Limb said, “It changed me forever--as far as wrestling goes, developing the career I have, teaching, and coaching. Having a strong work ethic is great for what I am doing now--helping kids and making them better individuals.”

A healthy belief in the importance of wrestling accompanies Mr. Limb’s coaching. Mr. Limb said, “A strong work ethic on the practice mat builds good character and integrity.”

Coach Limb’s opinions are also those of his wrestlers. Senior Sawyer Marley said, “I’ve been on the high school wrestling team my freshmen through senior years. Wrestling teaches you to work hard and never give up.” Sawyer recently suffered a minor head impact injury in a match. Had it not been for his sheer hard work and determination, principles endowed unto him by his coaches, Sawyer would have just given up. Instead, Sawyer chose the less traveled path of hard work. Sawyer won the match and no permanent damage was done.

Mr. Lanny Wake has taught literally thousands but has now stepped into the assistant coach role under Mr. Limb. Mr. Wake said, “I have been coaching here at Cameron since 1981. I also coached a couple years at Lathrop. Coach Limb is a good coach. He has his own style of doing things and I think he is doing a great job. He did a great job coaching at Gallatin and I think he is going to do a great job here.”

Though the actual techniques the two coaches use to train the wrestlers may differ, the basic belief in hard work seems to be fundamental. Senior Tyler Daniels said, “I have learned to always work hard and never give up. I think Coach Limb and Coach Wake have the same coaching style, which is to just go out there and get done what you need to get done.”

From the words of his students and the man who taught him, it would seem that Mr. Limb’s coaching career in Cameron will be one of renown for future generations to look back on with pride. Mr. Limb said, “I love the coaching job here. I  plan to keep on coaching as long as I can or until I retire, whichever comes first. ”

A new coach is always a new experience, but new experiences can be great ones. The Cameron Wrestling program looks forward to Coach Limb’s coaching for many years- may they be spectacular.
