District Choir Auditions come only once a year and students from around all of the Northwest District of Missouri come together to create waves of sound. The best of the best among choir students assume the form  of a group of seraphim arranged to create harmony with their voices.  Cameron students are allotted the privilege of singing in a large ensemble mixed with an abundance of varied schools. This year, 11 students from Cameron tried out for this prestigious event. Nine students made the Choir, but even the students who didn’t make the choir had a good time.  Freshman Michael Zittritch said, “Yeah, I did not make it in, but I had a lot of fun; I will definitely do this next year.”

Sharing similar views to Michael, Senior Erin Smith said, “I had a lot of fun trying out this year.” This was her third year trying out as well as her third year to make the choir. Throughout the years she and other students across Missouri have enjoyed the district choir auditions because of the thrill of the process.

Telling a little about the audition itself, Erin said, “In order to try out you have to have a prepared solo and sight read.” For those who do not know what sight reading is, this is the process where a starting pitch is played for the person auditioning, and they must sing the entire song by interpreting the intervals written upon a piece of sheet music. The process is more difficult than it sound and trips up even the most experienced veterans.

There were a lot of veterans to the event this year. CHS Choir Director Brian VonGlahn said, “Over half of the ladies and gentlemen that tried out were juniors and seniors.  About 380 people tried out for the choir and about 150 made it.”  The date that all these people are waiting for is  October 23, 2010. This will be the date for the District Choir’s practice and performance.

Of the people who made the district choir, only the juniors and seniors get to try out for the All-State Choir.  These juniors and seniors will be judged worthy of  All-State Choir depending on how well they did at districts and how well they perform their part in this year’s try out piece, Exultate Justi.  Auditions for the All-State Choir will take place the same day as District Choir.

Participants from Cameron will include: Sophomores Ashtyn Clay, Daniel Sloan, and Adam Ussher; Juniors Taylor Bogle, Zane Clark, Jake Robinson, and Braiden Van Brunt; and the Seniors Pauline Santos and Erin Smith.  Wish them luck!
