The canned goods CSU collected last year for the food pantry. - Mr Williams

Halloween is a time to dress in costumes and go door to door to collect candy, but for the second year Cameron High School's Christian Students United [CSU] will be doing something a little different. CSU is going to dress up in costumes and going trick-or-treating, but they aren't going on Halloween or to collect candy. They are going to collect nonperishable food items for Cameron's food pantry on Tuesday, October 27. Many of the students who went last year are going this year.

"I'm going to go again this year. I enjoyed it very much last year, except it was cold. It was a nice time with my friends from high school and it was nice to see everyone giving in the community," said Sophomore Michael Fleshman. Last year CSU only trick-or-treated for about two hours, but they collected 335 pounds between 8 members.

"This year our goal is to collect 500 pounds. I think if enough students come out we could make our goal. I think we will also try to collect for a few hours this year. There is also
a woman's shelter opening in Cameron this month, so we're going to expand it [trick-or-treating] to where we are collecting things like clothing or toys for the shelter as well," said CSU Sponsor Mr. Derek Williams. Expanding the activity to help the woman's shelter is not the only change to this activity CSU hopes to make.

"We are going to try to get it out there more that we are coming and that's what we are looking for. We would also like to include the churches in some way this year. We want to ask them [pastors and youth ministers] to announce what CSU is doing, if they could announce that in church, and announce that we are going to be looking for nonperishable food items and let everybody know that anyone who wants to help would be very much appreciated," said CSU President Senior Meghan Mulcahy. CSU needs help spreading the word about what they are doing and why they are doing it.

"We are a Christian group. Christians are people who believe in Christ and if you believe in Christ you should be Christ-like. Christ spent his whole life serving people and this is a way we could serve people," said Meghan.

CSU is doing a great thing by serving their community. They need support from the community, so they ask everybody to donate nonperishable food items if they hear a knock on their door and see some kids dressed up in costumes before Halloween. Help your community, put on a costume, and join CSU in their drive to help those in need.
