The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test offers students many things from scholarships to awards.

The PSAT is a pre-entry college exam and a 'junior' level SAT. It helps student plan for classes their Senior year. This also helps students get ready for colleges. They find out what their strengths and weaknesses are after the test.

To be eligible to take the test a student must be a sophomore or junior. They must also pay a fee of $15. Only five to eight students take the test every year.

The test has many different questions, each of which are academically different. Questions include math problem solving, critical reading skills, or even writing skills.

There are different ways students can study for the test. They could use a school textbook or even take practice tests online. There is also a practice pamphlet they can use which is identical to the actual test.

The test is on October 14 at Cameron High School. It will be at 8 a.m. in the guidance office. October 14 is a Thursday, so testers will be testing all morning during school and responsible for any classwork missed.

"This let's them know if they're ready for college," said Counselor Ed Green.

After the test is turned in, the college board grades it. The test is graded against other students nationally, and the scores determine whether or not a student gets a scholarship or not.

There is only one percent 1% of students nationwide that get scholarships from this test, but there are hundreds of scholarship sponsors.  The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test gives scholarships to juniors with high scores. There are a total of 700 National Achievement $2500 Scholarships awarded each year. Sophomores can qualify for a Missouri Scholars Academy summer program.
