$0Drama Honor Society (DHS) held its annual barbecue last September 4. At the barbecue Director Ms. Melissa Harper and Co-Director Mr. Derek Williams announced that this year's fall musical will be "Honk". Honk tells the story of the Ugly Duckling with a more modern and comedic twist. Honk has a large cast of characters, and to fill all those roles a large number of veterans will need to return to the theater along with many new faces to make this musical a success.$0$0The drama program has had strong numbers in years past, but this year that has changed. Ms. Harper, who has directed at Cameron for 13 years, said, "Talking to students we have a very large interest from the girls and we have not had a very good turn out as far as boys saying they are interested." She is concerned that there will be a large number of girls and very few guys. "Honk" helped solve part of this problem because many of the characters in the play can be played by either a boy or a girl.$0$0 $0$0So why the hesitation from the guys? Ms. Harper said"I think that boys are usually more cautious getting into drama, which is very silly because we find out most of the time that boys are probably better at acting than girls." This is one of the reasons numbers are down this year. Ms. Harper also said, "We really encourage freshmen to get involved because the earlier you get involved the faster we can build you up to get bigger parts."$0$0DHS Vice President Lindsay Mattox, who wanted to do "Honk" before it was even announced, has a theory on why numbers are down too. She said, "I'm not sure, but I think it goes in spells. Sometimes we have a lot and other years we have few." Lindsey has participated in the drama program since her sophomore year, and became interested when her Grandmother, who is a music teacher, told her that she should go out for it. $0$0Ms. Harper said Freshmen are usually hesitant about joining drama because they are still getting used to high school and are afraid of what other people will think. Even so, there is interest from some freshmen.$0$0 $0$0Freshman Ashtyn Clay plans to do drama all through high school. She looks forward to the fall musical more than the spring play. Ashtyn said, "I just had a passion for it." She had a lead as Captain Bree in the 8th grade production of "The Lady Pirated of Captain Bree" and a Lead as Jojo in the Cameron Community Players production of "Seussical the Musical". Ashtyn hopes to get a good part, if not a lead, in the CHS production of "Honk".$0$0Auditions for Honk were held on Thursday, September 10, at 3:30 P.M. at Goodrich Auditorium. Those hoping to get a part had to sing a 2 minute song and perform a 1 minute monologue for Ms. Harper and Mr. Williams. Ms. Harper and Mr. Williams both hope this year will be a success and that CHS drama will put on a great show.$0
