Many students can agree on how difficult the hallways of Cameron High School can be. With around five hundred kidsthe hallways are packed full. Kids used to think they could get away with just about anything, but not this year. Now students will have to look out for the "new sheriff in town." Officer Judy Becker has been hired this year to help out by enforcing the rules so students will follow them better at CHS.$0$0Having retired from law enforcement after 22 years, Becker now works at the school to deal with security and safety issues. She helps with many tasks such as making sure students have their planners while roaming the halls, which is something the school really wants to enforce this year.$0$0This would not be the first time Becker has worked for the school district. She was a school resource officer a few years back.$0$0“I’ve always enjoyed working with students,” she said.$0$0Students should expect the same hallway rules as from previous years, but this year the rules are being carried out better, which helps limit the number of students wandering about in the halls. For example, students are not allowed to walk around in the halls without a signed planner filled out in ink. Last year, a handful of students did not completely obey this rule.$0$0“I don‘t like it,” Junior Sawyer Marlay said about the stricter rules. “I don’t see any need for getting your agenda signed.“ He then explained how he had left his homework in his locker on a few occassions and could not get it due to not having his planner in his possession.$0$0According to Becker, students have been following the rules for the most part, but some habits just never die.$0$0“One of my biggest pet peeves is open lockers,” she said. As most students know, theft is not an uncommon thing at Cameron High School, yet another reason to have an officer around to watch out for those things.$0$0Since her position was created for this year only and financed by the government stimulus package, it is unclear whether Becker will continue her job at the school in the years to come. It would depend on the stimulus money coming from the state. However, having her around in the future would definitely be a big help in improving hallway activity.$0$0"I think Officer Becker has been a great asset," said Principal Don Gerber, who was glad to have Becker this year to help keep an eye on students.$0$0It it noticeable that this school year is full of changes. The hallway rules will be enforced better, and the school has Officer Becker to thank for that. Hopefully she will be around to help monitor hallway activity in the future.
