Eight Grade Students are engaging themselves into Career Day. -

Careers come in many different shapes and sizes--there are, firefighters, astronauts, doctors, or even teachers. Cameron Middle School eighth graders were introduced to some different careers Wednesday March 18, 2009.

The eighth grade teachers and CMS Counselor Mrs. Pruitt arranged the day so the students could see a career from each of the six career pathways. Of the six, Business, Mangagement, Marketing and Technology, Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technology, Health Sciences, Human Services, and Natural Resources and Agriscience were all present. Unfortunately, no one Mrs. Pruitt was unable to get someone for Arts and Communication.

The different careers represented included a lawyer, a person with a degree in veterinary technology, police officer, nurse, and someone who works for Missouri Department of Transportation. The day was full of information. The day is to help the students think about their future and what they can become.

CMS Counselor Ms. Pruitt said, "We have career day every year to help students with their career exploration--to help them find the right fit. We do this so the students can see people in those jobs and give the students a chance to ask questions about what they [the person in the job] like about the job, what they don't like about the job, and what type of education they need. It helps the students make this big decision."

The career day gave the students a chance to see what careers they really like or find interesting.

Eighth Grader Amanda Repert said, "I really liked the lawyer. She shared a story with us and it was interesting to how she worked." The students got to spend approximately forty minutes with each person. Career Day really helped them get to know themselves and who they would like to be in the future.

Eighth Grader Daniel Sloan was also intrigued by law. He said, "I would like to become an attorney. I want to become a prosecuting attorney. I would like to attend Harvard University, but I guess we'll see." Career Day was just another activity for the students in eighth grade to learn about the different careers in the world.

Ms. Pruitt said, "This year they went as a group to Best Buy and job shadowed as a group. They also did an interest inventory to where they found out what they liked and didn't like and what career path way would best fit them. They also for their language class did a research paper over a career where they found research in the Occupational Handbook or online. When the unit was over they were able to know a little bit more about the different careers out there."

There are so many careers out in the world to choose from. There is always a career for everyone. The Career Day gave the students a face-to-face encounter with someone who is in a specific careers.  Even though in eighth grade adulthood may seem so far away, the teachers want to make sure the students realize the future will jump out around the corner very quickly. Eighth graders now know they need to start thinking and preparing now for the life ahead of them, and now they're armed with more information to make a wise decision.
