Mrs. Harrold's Sociology class lines up to play the P.E. Class in Football. -

On March 7 and 8, Mrs. Harrold's Sociology classes headed down to the gym to play flag football. Students participated in the game to learn how football is parallel in some ways to society. Students got to take a break from taking notes and sitting in class and got to spend that class time contributing as an individual and a group in a physical activity while learning.

In general, the game of football involves relationships, jobs, teamwork, rule following, structure, and goals. The students each had a basic position or job on the team and had to work together as a team while following the rules to accomplish getting down the field to score a goal. Students had to also know the basics of the game and had to follow them. However, the team could add plays or improvise to make a goal. The students' jobs during the game were affected by attitude, behavior, individual characteristics, and temperaments. The lessons learned were individuals have roles in society and also roles as a part of larger groups or institution. Attitude, behavior, characteristics, and temperaments affect an individual's role as a spouse, parent, student, teacher, worker, consumer, producer, family member, leader, and player, as well as how that individual performs on a team or in a group. Members of society not only have to learn to make the most out of their unique abilities, they also have to learn how to handle the abilities and weaknesses of others in their own family, at work, or on teams they are a part of.

CHS Junior Mitchel Ruckman was a part of this experienc. "We got to play the freshmen P.E. class and got to whip up on them. Everyone got
involved and was a lot of fun," Mitchel said. "The lesson we were supposed to learn was how football is relevent to society. Mrs. Harrold did a great job finding something everyone could relate to and contribute to," he added.

CHS Junior Tyler Brassfield participated in the event as well. "It was a lot of fun to get out of notes and assignments and do something active while learning," Tyler said. "I learned on a more advanced level on how football is related to society, how they compare," he said.

It appears the football field has yet another use at CHS.  It's a classroom and place of learning, not just a gathering spot for Friday night festivities!
