Junior Darren Adams observes the "chalk" present someone left for him -

Its not unusual to see brightly colored writing and drawings on student cars in the CHS parking lot. This form of art is called "chalking", if it can even be called art. Don't fret, the chalk is meant for windows and washable, and can be bought at Wal-Mart or other general stores for a few dollars. While some students don't appreciate the vehicle graffiti, others laugh about it.

Cars can be chalked for various reasons, whether it be to announce something, show support, out of fun, or as a prank. A few volleyball players showed off their spirit by putting their numbers on their car. During Homecoming week, lots of students had their graduation year on their windows. Sophomores Lena Blackburn and Kerry O'Connor decorated Junior Halee Tharp's car in celebration of getting her license a few months back.

Kerry said, "I don't want anyone touching my car with chalk because my back window is plastic because its a convertible top." Some people feel the same as Kerry, and have various reasons as to why they are so protective over their cars. Others think its dumb to get mad over a little chalk, it all depends on the person.

"Tagging" is probably the most popular form of chalking. Students will take turns tagging each other back and forth by writing "TAG" on the other person's car window. This can go on over a long period of time.

Another game is blackout. In this case, someone scribbles over the windows completely. Sometimes even the windshield, and the rear windows. That's not fun to clean off.

Sophomores Brandy McClure and Kathy O'Donnell were victims in a chalking incident, but their cars were also saran wrapped and covered in syrup. Vaseline covered the door handles. A couple of students and even an alum were responsible for this. They came all the way out to Junior Jordan Green's house in the country to pull it off, and got caught in the end.

Brandy said, "It took so long to clean off."

"We had to do it by hand in the freezing cold," added Kathy.

A similar incident happened to Halee awhile back. She was mad at first, but looking back now she laughs about it. Kathy feels the same.

Chalking is a popular pranking trademark of this generation, and is sure to be sticking around for many years. But remember, like any prank it can go too far.  If it does, you'll be responsible for any damages, so be smart!
