The Plattsburg Community Center holds the new face for this year's Junior and Senior prom -

Valentines Day may have everyone busy thinking about roses and chocolate, but several Juniors and Seniors are focusing on the April Prom instead.

This year's prom committee consists of Juniors Ruth Northrup, Ashley Jones, Tyler Tvrdy, and Brittany Shaul. The class sponsors are Mrs. McIntosh and Mr. Calvert. The prom committee members are in charge of the theme, decorations, music, location, and activities related to prom. Funds are raised through things such as concessions during sports games at school.

In previous years there has been a DJ at prom, pictures of couples and groups, refreshments, and a different theme each time. These are a few of the things included in prom traditions. Another tradition several years back was the prom being held at Moela's in St. Joseph. This year, however, the location had been changed. "Last year there was a conflict between prom and another party that was going on for another group. So this year, we decided to have prom at the Plattsburg Community Courtyard instead to avoid any of those conflicts happening again," said Mr. Calvert in regards to the change.

"I think some students are really upset about the fact that prom's not at Moela's anymore--especially the Seniors--I believe, because the Juniors will be attending their first prom this year," Ashley says.

The items for prom depend on the theme itself. "Normally we [the prom committee] decide on the theme and then order the decorations from a prom catalog ," said Junior Ruth Northrup.

"Prom  preparations begin as early as October," says Ashley. "Sometimes we'll have parents and students help out with decorations depending on the theme."

The DJ for prom hasn't yet been announced, but pictures will be taken by Dean's Photography. Pictures are set up in the room where couples, groups, and friends can get pictures taken to remember the special night. Invitations are made depending on the eligibility lists and sent out about two weeks before prom. Attendees are allowed to invite out-of-town dates or underclassman dates.

Unfortunately there were problems regarding dates last year. Mr. Calvert explained, "Last year the problem was students bringing underclassmen to prom and them not being dates. Most of them were just friends or buddies. So this year, we're limiting the amount of underclassmen that can come."

The yearbook this year has decided to exclude underclassmen dates in prom pictures because of this issue. Students have mixed feelings about this decision.

"Some students may be disappointed or mad because the underclassmen dates won't be included in pictures, but it's also their fault because they took advantage of the rule last year. But I really think the change in yearbook is for the better," Ruth said.

Ashley agrees "The Yearbook is being fair because it's the Junior and Senior prom."

This year's prom theme is Greek Gardens. The dance will be held Saturday April 18. The prom committee members are available for questions.
