Caleb Cole and the Do-Wop Girls perform Little Shop of Horrors for the Blue Star Judges -

In November Cameron High School's Drama Department put on the musical Little Shop of Horrors for the community. The audience was filled with students, teachers, parents, other community members, and Blue Star Judges. The Blue Star Judges from Starlight Theatre took notes about how well the students and directors did in the musical. The students who participated in the production received their comments from the judges 2 weeks ago.

The students agreed with the judge's comments for the most part. "I agreed with them  mostly. I thought some things they said weren't true, but I guess it is a matter of opinion," said Freshman Pauline Santos, who played one of the six Do-Wop Girls in the musical.

Senior Caleb Cole, who was the voice of Audrey II in the musical, didn't quite agree with Pauline. "I thought they were very accurate with their advice and critiques as well as the compliments," he said.

He thinks the Blue Star Judges' comments help him grow as an actor. "They [the Blue Star Judges] give us a fresh eye and they catch things our peers and directors could possibly miss," he said.

Pauline agrees with Caleb. "They help me grow as an actress because they gave me advice on how to dress and how to look like my character. They also gave us a lot of tips I found really helpful," said Pauline.

Students are not the only ones who think the Blue Star Judges' comments help the students grow. "I think every single program can improve and I think that having an outsider who is not tied in and doesn't already know the stories behind all of our decisions does give a unique perspective on how the community would view the performance. It is very beneficial for us to grow," said Director Ms. Harper.

Not only do the students think the Blue Star Judges' comments help them grow, they also enjoy being judged for something they enjoy doing. "I really enjoy being judged because it gives me extra incentive to perform well. I tend to do better under pressure. It also makes me feel like it has turned into a competition and I am a fan of coming in first," said Caleb

Pauline also thinks the Blue Star Judges being in the audience helps them perform better. "Knowing that we [the cast] are being judged, I feel like I have to prove myself to them," said Pauline.

The CHS Drama Department has enjoyed getting the Blue Star judges to come to their performances for two years. It helps them know what they should change and what they should keep the same. Their comments have helped them grow into the actors and actresses they are today and will continue to help them grow as they go through their high school career, and possibly, their college career.
