It is true, this is what journalism is. No one cares about a situation is until they are going to be affected, so they have to be informed.
According to Spartan Chronicles Editor in Chief, Jamie Knox, "If news were purely decided by public opinion then the acts of war and terrorism across the rest of the world would not be news ”and I completely agree.
Crime would continue as a routine, news that happened in foreign countries would be irrelevant, and society would be clueless.
There’s also a sense of enriching the situations. If CNN simply reported the news no one would be interested. If WSB-TV just told the weather and gave you a step-by-step of the traffic report no one in the Metro-Atlanta would watch the news except when necessary.
There’s also a bit they do “Tough Questions” when they go around asking businesses why certain things happen and why their reactions were what they were. This not only informs their audience of a certain situation or business, but it is also used a source of entertainment. Sometimes, one sees business owners slam doors in the reporter’s face, or try to lie or even just using an expletive to get them to go away.
News stations do this to help protect the community the best way they can. Whether it be protecting them from a rip-off, bad service or just a disappointment. Places like CNN or World News Tonight help families with military members. I know from experience that when a family member is deployed, they can’t always contact you and you want the assurance that they are as safe as possible. Because we have stations like this that have multiple headquarters that communicate with each other and bring the news back to us, we can either have that assurance that our loved ones are safe. Yet sometimes, we receive very disturbing news before we are actually supposed to have it.
The news also is extremely graphic. Because it is news, there are not a lot of censors. You get “the news”. Whether you wanted all the information or not, you get it with the news. The journalist's job is to inform you. If you don’t want to see or hear it, you need to turn away from that channel or radio station. The reporters are just doing their jobs, telling you what’s going on in the world. From your street to the other side of the world, you’re going to get the information regardless.
