Celebrities are often looked up to and serve as role models to young adults or children. So what kind of effect are they having on us?

Front pages of magazines are often plastered with news conveying negative images of celebrities.

For example, there are often pictures of stick thin celebrities and models displayed in pictures.

Young teens want to look like these icons. This can lead them to be self-conscious about their appearance and can lead to things like anorexia and bulimia.

Plastic surgery is another Hollywood craze. Celebrities who look unrealistically good set a high bar for young people, who then may turn to things like plastic surgery to solve their insecurities.

There are also various pictures and stories discussing celebrities like Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton and their wild experiences with drugs and alcohol.

These types of people are negative role models for young girls.

However, there are some positive role models out there for young people.

Actress Reese Witherspoon and professional women’s athletes, Maria Sharapova, Mia Hamm, Kerri Walsh, and Misty May are all wonderful role models who stay true to themselves. They make good decisions and encourage young women to be self confident.

They’re healthy and comfortable in their own skin and work hard to get where they are.
