Google Pac-Man - Brady Nissen

Everyone knows that Google.com changes its logo to represent whatever is special about that day; for instance, famous birthdays and holidays. But sometimes Google does different things to keep the interest of its users.

The staff at Google has a good sense of humor; for example, when you Google search the word “recursion”, which means ‘in a familiar way’, Google asks you if you mean the word “recursion”. It repeats itself in a way that represents what the word “recursion” means.

Another trick is the “do a barrel roll” search. The term “Do a Barrel Roll!” is a famous command in the video game Starfox 64. Google picked up on this gag and put it into their website; whenever someone searches “do a barrel roll”, the web page does a barrel roll!

And yet another one is “let it snow”. During the Holidays, when a user searches “let is snow” the screen will become cloudy with falling snow!

When Google changes its name design to correspond to whatever is happening that day, sometimes the Google design is also interactive. On the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man’s creation, Google changed its page into a Pac-Man version of the Google logo.  This allowed users to click on the logo and play a game of Pac-Man. On the 96th anniversary of Les Paul’s birth, Google changed it’s logo into a guitar, complete with strings that could either be plucked with the cursor or played by pressing ‘1-10’ on the keyboard.

Some other people have decided to make their own interactive Google pages. Google Gravity is a fan-made webpage that falls down whenever the user tries to search something. As soon as they type in a topic and press search, the top 5 links drop from the ceiling of the page.

Google has been making sure to keep their users interested in them. This is probably why they are the world’s largest search engine!
