All around the halls of Catonsville High School, students can see the life-sized drawings that were created by their fellow CHS students. These drawings around the school were created by the kids in AP and regular Studio Practice.
Art teacher Ned Brannon gave these students a project to create these installation drawings, which portray images in realistic environments, but students were still allowed to add their own imagination in as well.
Senior Vincent Tydings drew himself throwing something into the trash can.
“I thought of it on my own and just thought it would be cool because people will actually think it’s someone there,” he explained.
His project was a success. Many students and teachers confess that they were fooled when they walked around the halls and thought initially that these images were actually students.
Senior Sam Temple also drew herself stretching across the air. Her drawing had a more exaggerated twist to it. She drew exaggerated legs, emphazing on her tallness.
“I felt that it portrayed me, I wanted to draw myself as the way I see myself which is distorted and large. I got the whole idea when I was stretching in my living room and my sister was taking pictures of me. Looking through the pictures then I got my idea for this project,” she described.
Another installation drawing that can be seen around the hallways is the spider drawn by junior Brent Brooks. Taking about three weeks to draw, Brooks’ image is of an animal, rather than a human.
“I like spiders, and I think they’re cool and beautiful. Even through everyone else finds them creepy, I find them pretty interesting, so I decided to do a spider as if it was life size,” he said.
These drawings around the school really portray the true talent that CHS has in their art department. Students now can have more of an appreciation of the art of their friends, and a better understanding of concept of installation drawings.
