At-a-glance

The Republican debate was last night in Las Vegas. Seven Republican presidential candidates clashed over issues like illegal immigration, taxes, and health care. The debate was sponsored by CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference.
The debate was 90 minutes long with most of the heated questions aimed at former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and former Godfather’s Pizza executive, Herman Cain. Romney and Perry clashed repeatedly throughout the debate, while both traded harsh accusations and both showed flashes of anger. When Perry criticized Romney for hiring illegal immigrants to work on his lawn, Romney simply laughed in Perry’s face.
"Mitt, you lose all of your standing, from my perspective, because you hired illegals in your home and you knew about it for a year," Perry said, turning straight to Romney. "And the idea that you stand here before us and talk about that you're strong on immigration is on its face the height of hypocrisy."

Romney then attempted to respond, but Perry refused to let him answer.

"You get 30 seconds," Romney said, looking to the debate host, Anderson Cooper. "This is the way the rules work here, is that I get 60 seconds and then you get 30 second to respond. Right? Anderson?"

Perry interrupted: "And they want to hear you say that you knew you had illegals working at your ... "

"Would you please wait?," Romney retaliated. "Are you just going to keep talking?

"Yes, sir," Perry said.

A tired Romney shot back.

"You have a problem with allowing someone to finish speaking," Romney said. "And I suggest that if you want to become president of the United States, you have got to let both people speak. So first, let me speak."

This was just the beginning to the heated debate between all seven candidates, but more so the beginning to the heated debate between Romney and Perry. Perry’s standing among GOP voters has slipped recently after poor debate showings, so he made it clear he was going to approach last night's debate aggressively. It will be interesting to see if his aggressive tactics will help or hurt his standings.

Plus, the crowd at the Las Vegas debate appeared to be pro-Romney because they booed Perry when he showed his aggressive side. Some claim Perry hurt himself for being to aggressive.

It will be an interesting week to see how the GOP standings turn out after such an intense debate. And it will be interesting to see where Perry and Romney stand in comparison to each other. Another addition to the GOP presidential candidate saga!
