Imagine pulling up to an empty red light on Edmondson Avenue late at night and waiting five minutes for no reason. This recurring problem was fixed this past summer with a roundabout at Edmondson Avenue and Old Frederick Road.

Roundabouts are circular intersections that help traffic flow safely and efficiently. The one at Edmondson replaces an old timed light that many thought was too long, and the timing of the light didn’t coincide with the amount of traffic passing through it.

“There is not enough traffic to justify a light, but there is too much traffic for a four-way stop. In situations like this the new option is a roundabout,” explained local resident Dianne Eff, based on information from community meetings where Baltimore County engineers spoke.

This roundabout was modeled after a very successful original roundabout in Perry Hall. The Edmondson roundabout is unique because of its proximity to a middle and elementary school.

According to The Catonsville Times, the roundabout will save money in the long run compared to a traditional light due to the lack of upkeep and electricity. A roundabout is also more environmentally friendly because, when motorists do not have to stop and wait for the light to change, there is less idling time.

“Now you don’t have to wait at the red light, especially at like twelve at night and there was no one there. It was the worst,” remarked senior Trey Hunt, a nearby resident.

Safety is a major concern at any intersection, especially on a busy road like Edmondson. Roundabouts also promote safety. Most types of dangerous collisions are avoided because all cars are travelling in the same direction.

It is estimated that crashes are reduced by 40 percent, and those involving injuries by 80 percent, thereby making the intersection safer overall. Roundabouts reduce more serious crashes and make the intersection safer overall.

Pedestrian safety is increased also because of the decrease in speed of the cars and the short crossing distance.

Not only is the roundabout efficient and safe, it is also fun to drive around according to some drivers.

“I enjoy driving around the circle a lot; I even drove around the circle 24 times setting a Catonsville record with the fellas,” stated senior Tory Harding.

Some drivers are skeptical about the roundabout, especially when it comes to trying to get in when other drivers are already there.

“No, I hate roundabouts; no one knows how to drive in them or the rules for them it’s a disaster. You see people trying to cross and then cars who are cutting them off; it’s kind of like a little tango that is confusing and dangerous,” added Pulliam.

From the economic standpoint the roundabout seemed like a good idea to young drivers who are always short on money and gas.

“It saves gas because you don’t have to stop and go,” commented Harding.

One downside to the new roundabout that was agreed upon was the construction period. Drivers found that the road was confusing, closed off at some points, and it was harder to get around during construction.

“I also had to make a new route to get to my friend’s house because I couldn’t even get through,” remarked Pulliam.

The new roundabout still has many issues that are being sorted out and information from Baltimore County engineers says that the roundabout is still being improved. The signage and lighting is being improved upon and other changes could be made as well.
