CHS’ Varsity Cheerleading squad has become significantly stronger this year.

The conditioning has seemed to become a lot more intense.

“It’s harder but worth it,” senior Drew Tyler commented. She also added that she thinks the conditioning will make the team better as a whole. Other team members agree.

“We run more often…more push-ups and crunches…running in place with knees above hips…wall sits…all that stuff,” Nadya Spice added.

Sophomore Nathalia Haskett also stated that the team has to jog a lot. This year is junior Whitney Luu’s first year on the varsity squad.

“JV has more freedom. On varsity the coaches are stricter and if you can’t get something right, you have to do it over and over and over again,” Luu said.

Pondering the question about how the team compares to prior years, Captain Stephanie Meehan said that this year’s team has several returning added varsity members who may not have been on the team last year.

“This year we have more of an older team. Many of the girls on the varsity team quit last year and so there were a lot of JV cheerleaders that got moved up…this year we have more varsity because they came back.”

According to Spice and senior Chrystal Phillips, Perry Hall, Kenwood, and Hereford, usually get the top three places at regionals. When asked about whether she believes that the squad will make it to regionals, Luu said that the team is good enough to make it to regionals and added that the varsity team has “more unity” in comparison to her experience on the JV team.

On the same topic, Spice said, “It’s kind of up in the air…we have a chance, I’m not sure how good.”

She went on to explain that, “There used to be a lot of drama but there isn’t anymore…we all like each other so it’s hard to get serious about working”.

Meehan also brought up that there used to be a lot of drama on the team but she said that there isn’t really any this year. With that thought she added that with the hard work and dedication that this team has, the team should make it to regionals.

She explained that they definitely have the talent; they just need to make sure that they’re dedicated.

“I think we have a chance of placing…we were close last year”, Haskett, said.

Tyler seemed to agree with Haskett by saying that the team was good last year but she thinks they are really going to win this year.

“We’re really hoping to bring home medals to homecoming,” she added.
