The Girls’ Varsity Soccer team had a great season this year. Their preseason record was only 1-3-3, but their league record was 12-0. Their overall record resulted in 13 wins, 4 ties, 3 loses and a trip to the CCS playoffs.

“Our toughest opponent was ourselves,” said Coach Arturo Figueroa. “Our goal was to repeat the championship (league champs) and to advance in the CCS playoffs at least one game.” The girls met their first goal and became league champions for the third year in a row.

The girls’ varsity team had some ups and downs during the preseason. “The worst game was against Notre Dame during the preseason,” said Figueroa. “I knew we could beat them, but they ended up beating us.”

The girls got their act together during the league games. The best game was against the North County Condors.

Debbie Ramirez, a junior, agreed and said, “It determined if we were league champs. The first half was tied, but in the second half we scored three goals.” Ramirez believes it showed how much Alisal wanted the MBL.

Ramirez said, “It was a fun season, we were undefeated in the league and we played hard in the CCS game.”

The team will lose six seniors, including their top player Mayra Cruz. “I feel very sad (leaving) because it was a great experience for me. It feels great being league champs because it can prove that Alisal can be ranked number one against competing high schools,” said Cruz, “That way, Alisal can earn some respect from other schools.”

12 players will return next year. Celene Sanchez, a sophomore said, “We still have a good team, so next year we can try again. We played good and we tried our best, but in the end it (CCS Championship) just wasn’t made for us.’’

However, next year the team will change leagues and go from the MBL to the TCAL. Both Cruz and Coach Figueroa believe the change in the league will be more challenging. Figueroa said, “It’s going to be a lot more competition, definitely. We’re going to have much stronger teams playing against us than in the MBL.”
