When at first you don’t succeed you try, try again and that is just what the boys did. Last year they managed to make it to the finals but lost against Watsonville, who was ranked number one in the nation, in the finals 1-0.
This year’s goal was twofold; get back to the finals and win, and beat Watsonville. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to do either.
The team was denied a matchup against Watsonville in the Homestead Christmas Cup because the tournament exceeded the number of allowed games.
Overall, the boys had a good year. They have managed to outscore everyone in the league especially Monte Vista Christian with a score of 22-0. They ended the season with a record of 22-1-1.
The main scorers were David Estrada, Aldo Meza, and Antonio Meza has led the team to 140 goals all year. The leading goalies are Alejandro Amezcua, Joel Guzman, and Larry Correa who managed 18 shut outs for the season.
The key to their success has been the team’s discipline said Sanchez it has kept them focused and has show a lot of respect to the players and him and has also kept them humble with the number of wins over the season.
Based on their impressive record, the team earned the number three seed in Division I. The team breezed through their two games undefeated winning both rounds; Andrew P. Hill 6-0 and Abraham Lincoln 7-1. Unfortunately, the team fell in the semifinals to 3-1 to Bellarmine College Preparatory
The boys played a good game against Bellarmine but Sanchez felt they could have played better. Losing their second chance at the CCS title was a “tough loss but made it further than any other team and no one can take that away from us,” said Sanchez.
This year there were16 returnees and eight new players but 13 of the seniors will be leaving. Sanchez said he would have to start rebuilding next year with a good base but is lucky to have new blood to play with.
For the coming year Sanchez hopes to have a similar season next year. He will have his players working hard and training hard, and play teams that are going to challenge them.
Next year boys’ soccer will be entering TCAL. Sanchez believes it will be a good change and more of a challenge. Sanchez feels it (changing leagues) will bring them up to the next level.
