The Arrowhead varsity hockey team squared off against fourth ranked Homestead last Tuesday at the Mullet Center.

The game was physical and the score was tight. Both teams came out wanting to win, giving the fans the year’s most impressive Arrowhead hockey performance.

Arrowhead took too many unnecessary penalties early in the first. Luckily, they were able to capitalize on one of them. Senior Andy Ellis flew up ice to put a shorthanded goal on the board for the Hawks.

“In those situations you can’t quit; you’ve got to bear down,” Ellis said.

The Warhawks headed into the locker room with a one-goal lead after the first period of play.

Although the second period remained physical with both teams getting their fair share of opportunities in front of the net, a goal didn’t come until late in the period. Scoring off a one-timer in front of the Homestead goal, junior Travis Hetzel upped the Hawks lead to two.

The third period didn’t sway in Arrowhead's direction. Homestead put one home early to cut the Warhawk lead to one. They capitalized later in the period off a scramble in front of the AHS net to tie the score and send the game to overtime.

Arrowhead’s third period wasn’t as strong, but goaltender Alex Koeppen held his own.

The sudden death was back and forth, with both teams, again, receiving their fair share of chances in front of the net. Arrowhead finally took the game after Ellis buried his second goal of the night to give the Hawks a victory.

“We worked hard and that just shows what hard work does,” Ellis said. “It was a fun game to be a part of and it was a huge victory for us.”
