At-a-glance

Starting last year, Arrowhead implemented a program called “WINGS: The Freshman Transition Experience.” 2011 WINGS took place from August 24-26 at South Campus, and all incoming freshmen were welcome. Applications to be a peer mentor at WINGS 2012 are due April 5th.

In his email, assistant dean of students Rick Witte says, “We are looking for a stellar, diverse group of students. If you think (you) would be a great mentor to our incoming freshmen, please fill out an application.”

Being a WINGS mentor can help students with “leadership opportunities, becoming a role model to future AHS students, and providing ongoing direction and guidance to incoming freshmen,” says Whyte.

If a student wants to be a peer mentor and a facilitator during WINGS 2012, he or she should pick up an application from a teacher or in the main office at either campus. After completing the form, students should find a teacher willing to recommend them. Teachers will then return them to Rick Witte.

“WINGS introduces freshmen to the high school experience to pave the way for a smooth transition to Arrowhead,” says Arrowhead guidance counselor Barb Whyte. “Students get an introduction to the environment, meet new friends and become a part of the Arrowhead community.”

Last year’s WINGS included two days of team building and learning about Arrowhead, and the final day was a “fun day” which included things like a school wide scavenger hunt and a hypnotist.

“During WINGS, your student will meet new people, learn about Arrowhead High School, and have lots of fun,” says the 2011 WINGS letter. “We promise!”

After the hard copies are processed, brief interviews will be conducted to any student who qualifies. Selected mentors will start training on May 31st.

It will also count for volunteering hours and is a great addition to a resume.

If anyone is interested, pick up an application from the North or South main office and fill it out. Remember, applications are due by April 5th, training begins May 31st, and WINGS 2012 will be in late August.
