Arrowhead athletics have a reputation for being exclusive and very competitive. While this promotes Arrowhead’s reputation as an athletic power-house, it can scare athletes away for fear of not being good enough. In many cases, student atheletes end up cutting themselves from sports just because the fear of rejection is too strong.

Arrowhead senior Allison Langenkamp says this is not the case for her. She participated in cross country her freshman and sophomore years and track all four years of high school. But she never made it to varsity.

Lagenkamp never participated in a varsity event, never scored a varsity point and never donned a varsity jersey, but she says she still had a good time.

“I just did it with friends,” she says. “But I still had a lot of fun with it even if I never made it to a varsity team.”

Lagenkamp says she would encourage other students (no matter what year they are) to come and try out for a sport, even if they don’t make the top team.

There are still opportunities for all skill levels this school year.  And with an exceptional athletics program, the experience may be invaluable, Lagenkamp suggested.

“Plus,” says Langenkamp, “Sports look good on college applications!”

Track tryouts are March 5^th, 2012. Girl’s softball and lacrosse and guys golf, lacrosse, and tennis have tryouts this spring. If students are interested in trying out a sport, head over to the Athletics office and see when the sport begins and how to join.
