At-a-glance

-
In December the Arrowhead Student Senate and various other clubs had a single goal: to help the less fortunate. Through various drives and volunteer activities food, money, clothing, blood and toys were collected.

Food Drive

Teachers encouraged students to bring in non-perishable food items for the annual food drive. An added incentive of a pizza party to the teacher with the most food helped get everyone involved. Students in Mr. Herriot’s and Mr. Reichle’s classes grabbed the prize with a combined collection of over 6,200 food items. “Mr. Reichle’s inspirational speech ‘Fire in the Belly’ motivated students to donate food, resulting in our collection of over 3,000 food items,” said senior Kirsten Stapleton.

When it was all over, volunteers from Student Senate distributed over 1000 grocery bags of food between the Hartland and North Lake food pantries.

Scavenger Hunt / Staff Donations

The varsity baseball team and members of Student Senate conducted a food scavenger hunt. Students were given a list of food and sent around neighborhoods to search. For each item of food collected, groups received five points. One point was given to each duplicate food item. At the end of the hunt, the team with the most points was rewarded with movie passes.

Staff donations allowed fresh food donations to 17 families in the Arrowhead community.

Pennies For A Cure / Clothing Drive / Christmas Run-Walk

During lunch periods student placed extra change and dollar bills in large containers to raise money for the less fortunate. With that money, Mr. O’D, Student Senate advisor, bought brand new clothing to add to the clothing drive. Students also contributed by bringing in clothing. Clothing and School supplies were sent to the Red Cloud School in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Mr. Mike Mulrooney organized his annual Christmas Run/Walk, and donated the proceeds to student senate for this season’s drives. Many staff members participated in the event.

Blood Drive

This year 270 students and staff members signed up to donate at the blood drive, setting a new record. Overall, 265 pints were collected, which is also a new school record. 37 percent of the eligible donors signed up to donate this year, up 5 percent from last year. Mr. O’Driscoll, the overseer of many holiday drives, deems the blood drive his favorite.

“It gives students a tremendous opportunity to give,” he said. “The blood drive is the only drive where students can’t use their parents’ money—they have to give of themselves.”

Toy Drive

Student Senate collected toys for the Waukesha County Christmas Council. With over 500 toys, Arrowhead students contributed to smiles on children’s faces this holiday season. “You just feel good about donating to the less fortunate,” said senior Valerie Johannes. “I am proud of myself.”
