At-a-glance

The varsity boys’ track and field regional went rather well for the Warhawks. Arrowhead finished with 9 first place finishes in the 18 event competition to topple 8 schools. In the final tally, the Hawks won with 52.5 points to spare.

“We were pleased to have a lot of outstanding performances,” Coach Chris Herriot said. “We hope we can keep our momentum heading through sectionals.”

Placing first for the squad was 200 m runner Mike Berendes with a 22.5 finish. He also took the long jump after a 20-06.00 leap. Nick Fulton swept the 3200 m run with a 9:52.20 while Eric Felt finished with a 38.80 in the 300 m hurdles. In the 400 m dash Pat Carew finished ahead of the pack with a 53.20 while Peter Emmerich squeezed by in the 1600 m run after beating his opponent by a tenth of a second with a 4:34.90. Shot-putter Mitch Kroll also tacked ten on the board for the Hawks after a 52-04.75 heave. As a team Arrowhead was unstoppable. The 4x400 m relay team consisting of Berendes, Brad Peterson, JoeMcFarland, Felt, Jason Sleaper, and Carew stole a first place finish with a time of 3:24.50. Berendes, Peterson, Paul Schiller, Felt, Lucas Ciezki, and Carl Goehner also took first in the 4x200 m relay after a 1:30.10 finish.

The second place finishers held strong in their close finishes after Pietro Norante vaulted a 13-09.00. Peterson finished with a 38.90 in the 300 m hurdles as Mike McFarland captured a second after a 9:56.40 in the 3200 m run.

Stealing a third place victory was the 4x800 m relay team of Joe McFarland, John Verre, Dave Emmerich, Craig Widenski, Sleaper, and Drake Gravengood with a 8:15.60 finish. Sal Fadel also stole a third in the pole vault after leaping a 13-06.00, while Goehner ran a 15.40 in the 110 m hurdles. Kroll also took third in the discus throw with a 147-04 toss.

The 4x100 m relay squad of Ciezki, Goehner, Mike Unger, Schiller, Chris Cobus, and Phil Unger squeaked by with a time of 45.00 to take a fourth place finish.

The Arrowhead finishers will now advance to sectionals, but it won’t be any jog in the park.

“We will have some tough competition,” Herriot said. “We will have to have a good day in order to send as many athletes to the state meet as we had last year.”
