At-a-glance

“Mmmbop” was on the lips of every toe tapping teen just six years ago. But then, the Hanson Brothers, Isaac 19, Taylor 15, and Zac 12, disappeared. Their attempted comeback in 2000 with the CD “This Time Around” failed miserably.

Recently, their new album “Underneath,” catapulted Hanson back to the top of the charts. Working closely with the likes of Matt Sweet, this trio, now ages 25, 21, and 18, tries to target a mature audience, hoping to classify as Indie Rock or Adult Alternative.

With support from MTV and various radio stations, Hanson is now on tour for their $1.5 million album. Coming to Miwaukee’s The Rave, several Arrowhead students look forward to the concert.

Junior Robyn Laatsch won free tickets from Kiss FM and explained she “liked the little cute one (Zac).” Attending along with Laatsch is Megan Myers. “It’ll be a rootn’ tootn’ good time!” she cried.

However, there is a darker side to the perspective on Hanson. “Hanson! At The Rave?” asked Heidi Anderson. “That’s an oxymoron.” Others cannot get over their strange image such as Claire Sorenson who believes they, “still look like girls.”

Jared Hackbart is also perplexed about this band. “I think they’re a bunch of little school boys trying to impress nine and ten year old girls.” Maybe Hanson will never break away from their “Mmmbop” past of bubble gum shadows.

Though Anderson said Hanson was “ridiculous,” she was heard humming their song, only later to claim it was “stuck in [her] head.”

The Hanson Brothers grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and started playing music together from a young age. “It all started with us sitting around with acoustic guitars or pianos,” recalled Taylor, the group’s keyboardist. Released through their own company, 3CG Records, “Middle of Nowhere” sold 8 million copies worldwide. Currently, “Underneath” has ranked No. 25 on Billboards Top 200 Debut.
