At-a-glance

In our four years at Arrowhead High School, sports teams and individuals have had a magical run. Twelve different sports teams or individuals have won state titles; some have even won multiple state crowns. The teams listed below are the 10 most dominate from our time at Arrowhead. Each team or individual has won a state championship.

10) Gymnastics 2009

The 2009 gymnastics squad brought home the school’s first ever gymnastics state trophy. At state they finished with a score of 142.03. The team was led by then junior Lindsey Day, who took fourth place in the all-around. Gymnastics also won a state title in 2010 by coming on strong late in the year.

9) Boys’ Track 2009

This squad won state by the highest margin (15 points) and had the highest score (52) since Madison LaFollette in 2002. Senior Tim Hucke won the 800 meter dash, the 4x200 meter relay team of seniors Jake Weber, Chris Pendergast, Evan Resimius, and junior Casey Panawash-Bielinski took first, as did the 4x400 meter relay team or Hucke, Resimius, Panawash-Bielinski, and junior Tyler Zeman.

8) Gabby Levac, Cross Country 2009

In 2009, Levac won her second straight cross country championship, finishing with a time of 14:36.7. The pressure was on her all season after winning state as a junior, and Levac bettered her state score from her junior season by six seconds. Levac will run at Duke University next year.

7) Boys’ Hockey 2009

Arrowhead captured their first hockey championship by defeating Fon Du Lac by a 5-1 score. The Warhawks finished the season with a 21-5 record. The combination of seniors Conner McBride and David Clark, along with junior Brian Berger, was an unstoppable line all season. Great goalkeeping by senior Nick Kohn also helped secure the teams first state championship.

6) Girls Swimming 2009

The 2009 girls’ squad obliterated the state competition, finishing with a total of 303 points, 122 points better than second place Madison East. The 200 yard medley relay team of senior Caryn Knight, junior Emma Goral, and sophomores Kate Jones and Haley Pietila finished first at state. Goral won the 100 yard butterfly. Winning was the 200 yard freestyle relay were Goral, junior Holly Johnson, and freshmen Katie Duranso and Julia Mikota.

5) Nick Hucke, Wrestling 2007

Hucke, who didn’t lose a match in nearly two and a half years to end his time at Arrowhead, dominated the 2007 season on his way to his second of three state titles. Wrestling in the 130 weight class, Hucke finished the season at 49-0, and won the state final match by a whopping 21-3 technical fall. Hucke followed the Askren brothers to the University of Missouri, where he wrestles.

4) Boys’ Golf 2009

The 2009 golf team won their third straight state title. Senior Mike Sorenson, now golfing at the University of Wisconsin, led the Warhawks with a seventh place finish. Freshman Matt Ross and junior Steve Sorenson finished eighth and tenth, respectively. Steve Sorenson broke the junior scoring record for a season, taking the record from brother Mike.

3) Football 2007

The team won the state championship in blowout fashion with a 31-7 victory over Homestead. The closest conference game was a 28 point victory in the 14-0 season. Senior Jake Ferris and sophomore Brian Crook both ran for over 1000 yards, making a great 1-2 punch of power and speed.

2) Boys’ Basketball 2010

An incredible overall team, this year’s basketball team brought home their first ever state trophy. A magical ride to the podium included wins over stud recruits J.P. Tokoto (Menominee Falls) and Vander Blue (Madison Memorial) in the sectional and state finals, respectively. The team didn’t lose to division one competition the entire year. The team had pieces everywhere that allowed a state run. Seniors Ben Mills, Andy Fox, Mike Skarie, and juniors Charles Rushman and Charlie Fischer led the squad.
