At-a-glance

On January 30th, 2010, the Marquette Golden Eagles and the Connecticut Huskies played a physical game of basketball.

At the beginning, the score continuously went back and forth.  With five minutes left in the half, UConn built up a 13 point lead.

As the second half started, UConn’s lead decreased due to crucial turnovers.  Marquette capitalized on these turnovers and tied up the game with eight minutes left.

With 41 seconds left, Sophmore Darius-Johnson Odom was fouled at the three point line to put him at the free throw line.  He made all three to tie the game at 68-68.

UConn turned the ball over with 25 seconds to take one last shot.  Senior Forward Jimmy Butler found an open area in the paint, faded away, and hit the two point shot to put Marquette back on top 70-68 with 2.4 seconds left.  On UConn’s last possession, they turned the ball over to Marquette to end the game 70-68.

Butler not only made the game winning shot, but also contributed with 21 total points and seven rebounds.

Recently, Marquette has been on the losing side of close games.  These losses came from well-known schools, such as West Virginia, Villanova, Florida State, and North Carolina State.  The reason for almost every close game was missed free throws including their game against West Virginia.  When Villanova played Marquette the first time, Marquette missed seven late free throws and lost 74-72.

Lazar Hayward commented about the win to ESPN saying, “It's a really great feeling, because we were on the other end of that five times, it's a very good feeling to finally be on the other side of that."

Monday Janurary 1st following this game, the Huskies were knocked out of the college rankings because of this loss.

Since January 20th, UConn’s head coach has been out on medical leave for unexplained health issues.  Since his leave the Huskies have been 2-6 including the loss to Marquette and the most recent loss to Louisville.  Former Guard for UConn A.J. Price commented to ESPN, “I hope he's OK. I hope it's nothing too serious, that he's able to come back and that he doesn't end his career this way.”
