The Arrowhead boys’ tennis team qualified number one and two singles to the individual state tournament on Thursday, May 22.

Number one singles player Jack Swan placed second at sectionals, earning himself a spot in the state individual tournament. Swan played both sub sectionals and sectionals with his nondominant left hand. His right elbowed was fractured when he fell during a match against University School earlier this year. Swan has placed third at the last two state tournaments.

In addition to Swan, Will Krieger at number two singles, also placed second at sectionals, earning himself a spot at the state tournament. Krieger took 7th at last year’s state tournament. The division one state individual tournament will be held on May 29th and 30th at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.

In addition to Swan and Krieger, the number one doubles team of Craig Caliendo and Ricky Bero; and the number two doubles team of Luke Sausen and Steve Wolfsohn will attempt to go to state via a special qualifier. The overall team placed second at sectionals.

“I think we really attacked well and played aggressively,” said Wolfsohn. “I think we made a lot of improvements from the start of the season; I’m very happy with how we played.”

The Arrowhead boys’ tennis team advanced 3 singles players and 3 doubles teams to Sectionals on Tuesday, May 20, 2008.

Despite a fractured right elbow, number one singles player Jack Swan won his only match of the day against Sussex Hamilton's Jacob Simonson with an impressive score of 6-4, 6-1. Swan needs to be present at sectionals in Beaver Dam on Thursday to receive a special qualifier for individual state at the end of May. Swan has taken third at the last two division one state tournaments. He will play sectionals left-handed again.

“You have to see it to believe it," Arrowhead tennis coach Russ Trimble said. "He's so fiercely competitive. He and (former Homestead state finalist) Brian Mikkelson used to play left-handed just for fun, but I've never seen anything like it. The serve is kind of a push serve and just trying to get it in, but he could hit it for a winner sometimes. "He's going to do whatever he has to do. If he can't do it right-handed, he'll do it left-handed."

In addition to Swan, number two singles player Will Krieger will also advance to Sectionals. Krieger is currently 15-0. Number four singles player Chris Hollo won both his matches to advance to sectional. The number one doubles team of Rick Bero and Craig Caliendo won their match on at subsectional and will also advance to sectionals. Number two doubles team of Luke Sausen and Steve Wolfsohn won both of their matches giving them a spot at sectionals; and number three doubles team of Johnny Young and Charlie Friedrichs, who are currently 18-0, also moved onto sectionals.

“Our opponents stepped it up,” said Wolfsohn. “We had played Kettle Moraine earlier in the season and they played a lot better today. We had a lot better footwork and put more balls away to win the match.”

Sectional is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Beaver Dam. The individual state tournament is May 29th and 30th.
