At-a-glance

Sooner or later, we’re all going to participate in a formal job interview in some way. Many people go into a formal interview having no previous knowledge of what is right and wrong.

The first very important aspect for attending a job interview as an interviewee is to dress nicely. The way you appear is what the interviewers will see first. If your clothes are ragged, dirty and smelly, chances are they’re not going to hire you to represent their company. Not only do your clothes make an impression, but also your hair. Take every part of your appearance into consideration because the second you walk through the door into the interviewing room, you will be judged whether you want to or not. This also includes any tattoos or piercings you may have. If possible, cover them up. It’s important to appear clean-cut and professional.

The second most important thing about job interviews is to know the precise time and location so that you know how long it will take you to get there. Knowing the amount of time it takes to get there will help you plot out when you need to leave so you can arrive before your scheduled interview time. Take a test run to the location so the chance of getting lost is eliminated. Also, make sure to arrive 10-15 minutes early. This makes a good impression and shows you’re responsible.

A very simple, yet sometimes forgotten gesture is to share a firm handshake with your interviewer! Sometimes the littlest things mean the most, especially if you’re competing for a job.

It’s not at all nerdy to do a little research about the company you’re interviewing for before you enter the interview. Showing knowledge and interest in the company presents you as a serious applicant.

So as the summer creeps upon us and we prepare to delve into a summer job, keep these important aspects in mind because you never know, they may score you your next job.
