At-a-glance

The School Board approved a $20,000 grant, from the Kern Family Foundation, to be distributed to the school for the next three years to help with the introduction of Project Lead the Way. Project Lead the Way prepares students for careers in technical fields, such as engineering and health. This project integrates more math and science classes.

Tom Whelan, a technology education teacher at Arrowhead, was credited for his work in pursuing this grant. Whelan will also help spread the word throughout the community to try to get more technologically based companies involved with the school’s technology education programs.

A student taking an entire four-year track of Project Lead the Way courses could earn about a college-semester’s worth of credits.

Beginning this fall and during the next several years, the technical education program will update its current courses of engineering and design, automotive, and others, replacing them with Project Lead the Way courses such as civil engineering/architecture and computer integrated manufacturing.

Money from the grant will help with software purchases, staff training, purchase of laptops, and other needs to support the program.
