“After Martin Luther King got shot, I feel like Bobby is the only one left,” explained a teenager working for Senator Bobby Kennedy’s presidential campaign.

Actor Emilio Estevez ('Breakfast Club,' 'Mighty Ducks') found the inspiration to write, direct, and appear in 'Bobby' when recently staying at the Ambassador Hotel. The film put a spotlight on the American hero, capitalizing on his racial tolerance and kind nature. Joining the presidential race in a time of turmoil, the Vietnam War, Bobby pointed out the need to eradicate poverty and racial inequality in the United States before venturing overseas. This allowed viewers to make the comparison to the current war in Iraq and the lack of genuine candidates who are not driven by corporate endorsements and special interest groups. It was as if Kennedy’s death symbolized the demise of hope to put an honest and legitimate figure into office.

The movie is based on the assassination of Senator Robert. F. Kennedy on June 6th, 1968. One could say the plot, comprised of daily events preformed by twenty-two people who were at the Ambassador Hotel when he was killed, was quite choppy. But in my mind, the character developments were essential in order to set up for the climax of the film, the assassination.

Surprisingly, a very long list of big-name stars filled the roles of the hotel patrons and employees that June 6th including Emilio Estevez, his father Martin Sheen, Helen Hunt, Harry Belafonte, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins, Joshua Jackson, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, Lindsay Lohan, William H. Macy, Demi Moore, Freddy Rodriguez, Sharon Stone, Elijah Wood, Nick Cannon, and more.

Though the entirety of the film lasted two hours, the last twenty minutes was definitely worth my $8.75 and then some. A combination of modern actors, historical footage, a voice over of Kennedy’s last speech, and a Simon and Garfunkel song left tears rolling down my cheeks and my heart filled with gratitude towards Estevez for paying a superb tribute to Bobby.
