The person referred to as "Golf Cart Man" by many students is back on the job after recovering from a serious accident.

Tom Ford is the school’s parking lot attendant who uses the cart in his regular inspections of the building’s perimeter. Good thing he was not in the cart when he was hit.

"A woman pulled out of Oak Knoll and T-boned me; the truck flipped three times and rolled over," Tom Ford said.

The accident occurred right in front of school as Ford was driving down Chamberlayne Rd. heading home for the day. Many students saw the crash from the inside their buses.

"His whole truck looked like it had been in the junkyard smasher; it was completely flattened," junior Heather Conway said.

She and other students witnessed the accident but were unable to help. EMS personnel soon arrived.

"The road was blocked one way, but coming the other way you could see them cutting the roof off the car," senior Samntha Kline said.

June 8 remains a day that Ford won’t forget. The day of the accident, Ford was taken to VCU Medical Center where he found out he had broken his left shoulder blade, 20 ribs, fractured his back in three places, and banged up his knee, injuries most of us cringe at hearing.

Recovery lasted until June 29, 21 days after the incident. After leaving MCV on June 9, Ford went to a rehab center for the remainder of his recuperation.

Students are glad to have Ford back cruising the parking lots in his signature golf cart.

"He’s like a piece of Hanover," Gaunt said.

Ford has been working at the school for five years covering anything from checking for parking passes to making sure students aren’t skipping school and hanging out in their cars.

"They call me ‘parking lot attendant’, but really I handle most outside security," Ford said about his role at Hanover.
