The newest addition to Spirit Week – Class Color Day – turned out to be a source of competition and controversy.

Class Color Day, where students wore a specific colored shirt based on which graduation class they belong to, clearly united and divided the student body into factions of pink, green, black, and orange.

Complete with shouting contests in the cafeteria and rivalries in the classrooms, the new addition to Spirit Week seemed an unexpected hit.

“Traditions usually bomb the first year,” said Kim Allen, senior and student body vice-president. “I didn’t think it would be that big.”

After Spirit Week, however, Allen’s own spirits were raised.

“It was pretty cool when I walked in and saw all the colors,” she said. “It was stressful, but I think they will definitely do it again next year. It’ll be up to the seniors.”

Students got to vote on which color would be their class color in English classes prior to Spirit Week.

“Pink dominated the votes,” Allen said. “There was a lot of room between it and green.”

Seniority ruled though, so seniors got the privilege to wear pink, which had been a favorite among all classes. Juniors were assigned green, sophomores got black and the fish got orange.

Questions arose as to how wearing pink would affect senior boys’ inherent masculinity, but some weren’t fazed.

“I already had a pink shirt anyway, so it worked out,” said Erik Johnson, senior.

A greater cry of indignation appeared to arise from the freshmen because of their assignment of orange.

“I didn’t want to look like a prisoner working on the side of the road,” said Stephanie Castro, freshman. “And we looked like pumpkins! The table at lunch looked like a pumpkin patch. The ‘goldfish’ thing was cute though.”

Despite the complaints, the joy of the competitive spirit that abounded on that day cannot be denied.
