The women’s fashions for fall 2009 are bold featuring trends such as plaid, animal prints, lace, and florals. Being able to incorporate these trends into everyday school clothes, though, is something that the Stevens student body does on a daily basis. Walking down the hallways of Stevens High School, is a very noticeable trend in florals. Dresses, shirts, skirts, scarves, and jewelry are just some of the ways that girls are wearing this fall print. The design of different florals range from small flowers with stems attached to giant petals. This trend seems to have no color limits, and reaches from blue to pink to black and everything in between. Holly Anderson, a sophomore at Stevens, was spotted wearing a shirt completely covered in very small flowers. When asked what her inspiration was for her outfit she responded, “[I feel like] I walk through a tornado in the morning. I just wear things I like.”
Another major fashion is animal prints. Most seen at Stevens are zebra, cheetah, and leopard. More noticeable in bags and shoes, animal prints are generally staying within colors from nature, but often, they are paired with accent colors such as pink or red.
Big prints such as stripes, houndstooth, and graffiti are also noticeable in the hallway. Stripes are on dresses and shirts, graffiti in shirts and jackets, and houdstooth in scarves and coats. Moriah Ruthford sported a green and gray striped shirt. “I like being comfortable.” She does not pattern after celebrity inspiration, but instead said “ I like my own style.”
In contrast, trendy Sarah Linn wore a completely black and white outfit to school recently. “I just like to match,” she said. “And completely black and white matches pretty well.” These colors can be paired in many different ways, and, therefore, fit into many different styles such as girly, punk, or vintage. The black and white trend also holds the unique capability to be mixed and matched with other trends like florals or prints.
Possibly the biggest trend at Stevens right now is plaid. Plaid can be worn in just about any aspect of a person’s outfit: plaid shoes, plaid shirts, plaid jackets, plaid belts, and plaid bags just begin to name a few. Plaid works in multiple color schemes, and in many different styles.
Fashion is a part of everyday life at Stevens High School, with students using trends as guidelines of how to wear favorite pieces rather than what to wear, so, the student body has an unique mix of personal and commercial style.
