Crisis In Egypt
Jan. 25, 2011 began the first of what would be nearly three weeks of protests and counting in Egypt. As of Feb. 16, there have been more than 350 deaths, according to the country’s Health Ministry. The Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who had served the country for nearly 30 years, resigned from office and fled Cairo Feb. 11, according to The Associated Press.
Although Mubarak’s title was that of “president” his reign suggested far from that, as he was essentially in control of the outcome of the election.
We at The Viking Views support the expansion of true democracy throughout the world; however, the way the resignation came about is not an effective means of protest. Violent demonstrations may seem efficient at first, but we believe the final outcome may come to nothing short of anarchy.
Furthermore, although Mubarak’s administration was not ideal, his resignation leaves Egypt in a state of unrest and disorganization. The Viking Views staff is glad there is a chance for new beginnings in Egypt and hope the state is able to install a satisfactory democratically elected leader in the future.

Blended Learning

With each passing school year comes changes and modifications to the district. Hoover is continually trying to offer new opportunities for students to further and better their education. For the upcoming school year, Hoover plans to implement a new blended learning program in order to do this.
These classes, which will be made available for juniors and seniors, will combine in-class instruction and online learning. Students can elect to take one or more of these classes, available in a variety of subjects.
We at The Viking Views believe this addition to the curriculum will be beneficial to many students. Students learn differently; it is important that the school offers a variety of ways to attempt to meet the needs of these different learning styles. Of course, blended learning may not be for everyone. While some students work well on their own schedule and at their own pace, others require the assistance and guidance of in-class instruction.
In addition to the benefits blended learning can have for students’ learning, it may also be effective in helping to fix scheduling conflicts. Oftentimes students have to choose between multiple classes of interest because of the limited periods those classes are offered during the school day. One of the hopes for blended learning is to alleviate problems such as these. Students may no longer have to choose between certain classes because of issues with scheduling.
We at The Viking Views believe blended learning is a great opportunity for the students at Hoover and can provide new and technologically advanced ways to promote education.

"Huck Finn" 2.0
It was recently announced that Mark Twain’s iconic novel, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” is getting a facelift, one we at The Viking Views like to think of as seriously botched. NewSouth Books in Alabama is planning on releasing an adjusted version of “Huck Finn,” with “slave” serving as a replacement for the n-word. In addition, “Injun Joe” will now be known as “Indian Joe,” and all other mention of the slang term “injun” will also be changed to “Indian.”
Yes, the n-word is an offensive term. We in no way condone the liberal use of it in every day conversation. However, in both literary and historical context, the repeated use of the word is completely justified. The novel was published in 1885, a time when the n-word was somewhat less taboo. It is unlikely Twain used more derogatory terms in an effort to offend his readers. Twain easily could have chosen “slave” or “Indian” himself. He chose that specific diction for a reason, and for people now, who are more than 100 years removed from the situation, to decide the language is inappropriate is ridiculous. Mark Twain, who opposed censorship, would be displeased.
We at The Viking Views believe that “Huck Finn,” in its original form, being part of the sophomore English curriculum for years should not be edited. By the time students reach their sophomore year, most are already aware of swear words and offensive slang terms. If corruption of childhood innocence is a concern, it is our society that should be held responsible, not classic literature.
