This month, a number of organizations kicked into high gear, focusing on sexual abuse awareness. A shocking amount of people are sexually assaulted each month. Not only is sexual abuse a common topic, it is an important one. Unfortunately, most people know someone who has been assaulted. For this reason, events like “Speak Out” are held.
Speak Out is an event that took place on April 24, 2009 on the campus of CSULB. The first Speak Out took place 10 years ago. It is presented this year by the Sexual Assault Crisis Agency, The Women’s Resource Center, as well as the CSULB Project Safe groups. Dubbed an “Evening of Healing and Empowerment for Sexual Assault Survivors,” the organizations behind Speak Out deliver two main points: sexual abuse awareness and prevention.
The Speak Out programs focus on how to be safe. The event gives those who attend a better understanding how to decrease the chances of abuse situations, by making smart decisions. The ideas of being informed and safe are big interests. By teaching helpful information, those who attend can both learn themselves, and spread the word. People are also given the chance to be empowered and in control, rather than always on the defensive.
There are three programs in Speak Out. There is the Open microphone, ClothesLine Display, and Self-Defense and Safety Instruction. In the open mic., males and females of all ages are able to tell their stories of any personal incidents. This is done for the speaker, and those listening in the audience. By breaking the silence, the process of healing and empowerment begins.
For the clothing line display, a collection of clothes designed by assault survivors is shown. Not only does this display promise a sense of style, but through its personal outfits, it proves meaningful. Last, there is the Self-defense training. Guests are taught to defend themselves not only physically, but to mentally prepare themselves before getting into a situation.
Anyone interested is strongly urged to show up and bring a friend or family member. Men and women, youth and adults need to be aware and everyone can benefit from being safe. By giving people thoughtful tips, Speak Out encourages people to use their knowledge for themselves and loved ones!
